SUMMARY

The present book «Medieval Inscriptions in St. Sophia’s of Kiev» is a continuation of our monograph «Old Russian Inscriptions in St. Sophia’s of Kiev of the 11—14th Centuries», iss. I, Kiev, 1966. Both books are based on new materials of the Old Russian written language — graffiti scratched in the 11 —17th centuries by visitors on the walls of the Sofiysky Cathedral, in Kiev erected in 1037.

Of 292 graffiti, inscriptions and designs found in the Cathedral in the course of restorations of fresco paintings in the period from 1957 to 1972,98 graffiti (No. 1—98) were published in the first book, the rest 194 (No. 99—292) are published in the present monograph. The numbers of the inscriptions are also put on the Catherdal plans in the places where the graffiti were found.

The book consists of seven chapters, conclusion and vocabulary. In the first four chapters the graffiti of the 11—17th centuries are considered. Within the chapters the inscriptions are grouped by their thematic indications. The memoranda, memorial, benevolent inscriptions and those concerning the frescoes are distinguished. The designs compose a separate chapter.

The first chapter «Graffiti of the 11th Century» deals with a number of inscriptions of the 11th century. Among them an unusual alphabet (No. 99v Tables I, II) consisting of 23 letters of Greek alphabet (only ^ is absent) and four Slav letters Б, Ж, Ш, Щ added is of considerable interest. The alphabet probably reflects the process of origin of Cyrillic written language from the Byzantine and Greek ones. Among the fresco inscriptions of the 11th century the appeal to St. Foka (No. 110, Table XVIII) painted on the fresco is of interest. Its author is a sailor.

In the second chapter «Graffiti of the 12th Century» attention is attracted by the memorandum (No. 12, Tables XVIII— XIX) on accepting the metropolitan Sofiysky Cathedral by the new Metropolitan Nikita in 1122. The inscription is read as follows: «In the month of October on the!5th day Nikita accepted..

Sudilo wrote». Communication of this event is read under the mentioned year in Ipatiy’s and Nikon’s chronicles.

Among the 12th century graffiti the inscriptions were particularly spread written by a widely known in Slav archaeology formula «God help your slave...» followed, as a rule, by the author’s name. In spite of the standard character of such graffiti rather interesting inscriptions are also available sometimes, among them, for instance, with the names of prominent historical figures of Old Rus: the Kiev prince Vasily-Vladimir Mono-mach (1093-1125) (No. 131, Tables XXV, XXXVII) or the Novgorod Archibishop Martiry (No. 133, Table XL, 12). Among other inscriptions of the 12th century there is one more interesting graffito of the pupil «Pishchan» by name who went to study to the Cathedral official: «Pishchan wrote went to the official as a pupil» (No. 120, Table XXVII). One of the inscriptions makes it possible to establish the place where the Prince stood during ceremonies. Prince’s place appeared to be in the western part of theg allery against the principal altar. (No. 122, Table XXVIII, 2).

Among the inscriptions of the 13—14th centuries considered in the third chapter the record of official Luka from the town of Turov is worth mentioning (No. 188, Table LXXXII, 1; LXXXIII, 1); «God, help your slave Luka, the official of the Turov sovereign». This is a record typical of the Cathedral graffiti made by the standard formula and supplemented by apost-script that Luka was an official of the Turov Bishop. Among the graffiti of the 13th century there is an injured record (No. 211) containing the date «In the year 6765 (1257) in the month of April, in 6...». This is the earliest inscription made on the Cathedral wall after the Tatar-Mongol invasion into Kiev in 1242,

Two inscriptions of that time inform on the death of certain Ioann Slepko (No. 213, 214, Tables CIV; CV): «In the month of March, on the 4th day a God’s slave Ivan Slepko died». The dead, apparantly, bore a relation to the Sofiysky clergy.

The important record of the 13th century was found on the fresco image of St. Onufry: «Saint Onufry, forgive me too your slave Prov, Valerets, Avraam the Belgorod Bishop of the Ioann Zlatousts church». From the content of inscription we can learn the name of one of the last Bishops of the 13th century of the town of Belgorod near Kiev.

The number of graffitUof the 15—17th centuries in the Cathedral described in the fourth chapter is comparatively small. There^are very few inscriptions of the 15th century. By the 16 — 17th centuries short memorial inscriptions with a word «wrote» (пиcaл)1nnd author’s name gradually disappear. Instead of them the graffiti with the words «was here». (Был тут) began prevailing. Inscriptions of dates with the initial word «year» (року) acquire particular distribution at that time. The inscriptions belonging to frescoes disappear absolutely.

Most graffiti detected in the Cathedral are dated from the 11—12th centuries. The graffiti are in Cyrillic writing, only several Glagolitic fragments are found. This shows that Glagolitic alphabet, though being known in Rus, was not practised on a large scale.

Studies in paleography of the Sofiysky graffiti which are dealt with in the fifth chapter evidence for the fact that their graphics (in the 11—12th centuries) is close to the book writing of such monuments as the Ostromir gospel (1056—1057), Izbor-nics of 1073 and 1076, the Mstislav gospel (about 1115), Yuriev-sky gospel (1119—1128), etc. It is especially seen not only in the letter’s design but also in using titles of abbreviations, in writing dates, etc. A certain delay in the evolution of letters’ design as compared to the monuments of book writing is a characteristic feature of graffiti graphics. Even in the 13th century in graffiti there still occurred the ancient designs of H («N») with horizontal and not raised crosspiece, of N («Н») with a long one, etc. Using of archaic letters may be explained by striving of the graffiti authors for giving the most expressive designs.

Indications of appearance of business writing, alongside with Russian uncial, which reflected an attempt to facilitate the process of writing might be observed among graffiti by the end of the 11th century.

In most inscriptions the author’s name plays an important part. Besides the Christian calendar names there are some Slav secular names Pishchan, Us’ko, Rut’ko, names: Zhadko, Bezui, Zhiznobud, Voinyata — as well as princely ones: Vladimir Svyatoslav, Svyatopolk, Ol’g (Oleg), Vsevolza (Vsevolod’s wife), etc. The name of Boyan known from «Lay of Igor’s Compain» which occurs in a form of a possessive adjective — Boyanyu is of interest.

A close relation of the Sofiysky graffiti to the monuments of book writing is probably explained by social belonging of the authors of the inscriptions. Among them there were priests, clerks, officials, monks, merchants. Three records are made by the princely persons or on their instruction: by Mikhail-Svyatopolk Izyaslavich (1093—1113), his mother Olisava and Vasily-Vladi-mir Vsevolodovich Monomach (1113—1125).

Inclination of a considerable part of the graffiti authors to a book tradition may be explained only by their participation in cultural environment which was determined by the activities of the Kiev Metropolia, the kind of which the Sofiysky Cathedral was. Another group of the authors was presented by persons to whom writing was not their every-day business. Inscriptions of these people are of special interest for linguistic studies and for insufficiently known problem on Old Kiev dialect in particular. Good location of the graffiti, Sophiysky ones included, is their important distinguishing feature. That is why the graffiti discovered in the Sofiysky Cathedral, except for several inscriptions made by the authors from other towns, are rather authentic monuments of the Kiev writing which cannot be said with confidence about most book monuments.

The Sofiysky graffiti evidence for a continuous tradition of the Kiev writing from the 11th to the 17th centuries inclusive and for the time of its highest flowering in the 11—12th centuries.

The book sums up a fifteen-year study of the Old Rus graffiti in the oldest architectural monument of Kiev Rus — the Sofiysky Cathedral in Kiev. The investigation shows that in total the graffiti of old buildings are an important historical source providing additional information on different sides of life in Kiev Rus.

Parmi eux: pretres, clercs, adolescents, moines, marchands.

mere — Olissava; Vassili — Vladimir Vsevolodovitch Monomah (1113—1125).
